Nasal polyps are soft, painless, noncancerous growths on the lining of your nasal passages or sinuses. Nasal polyps are the most common tumors of the nasal cavity. Small nasal polyps may not cause symptoms. Larger growths or groups of nasal polyps can block your nasal passages or lead to breathing problems, a lost sense of smell, and frequent infections. Nasal polyps can form at any age, but they're most common in young and middle-aged adults.
Symptoms of nasal polyps include:
- nasal obstruction
- nasal congestion
- runny nose
- facial pain
- reduced ability to smell (hyposmia)
- loss of smell (anosmia)
- loss of taste
- itching around the eyes
- chronic infections
What Causes Nasal Polyps?
The exact cause of nasal polyps is not known. however several factors are thought to cause Nasal Polyp development. The most common cause of nasal stuffiness is nasal allergies (allergic rhinitis). Irritants such as alcohol and tobacco smoke may expose membranes to infections and result in swelling of the membrane linings.
Polypectomy involves removing the polyps with a surgical instrument. It can be done through the nostrils, either with local anaesthetic (awake), or under general anaesthetic. The type of anaesthetic might depend on the number and size of the polyps, where they are, and how fit you are for an operation.
Endoscopicsinus surgery is done with a general anaesthetic. The surgeon will use an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a video camera at one end) to see inside your nose and sinuses. They will make small cuts to your face and insert surgical instruments to open the sinus cavities and remove the polyps.
