A Look at Your Ear, Nose and Throat

Ent is a branch of medicine that deals with diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ear, nose, and throat. Also called otorhinolaryngology.

There are many reasons someone might need an ENT doctor, including:

- People suffering from sleep apnea
- Chronic, recurring sinus issues
- Persistent swollen glands in the neck or throat
- Chronic upper respiratory infections
- Anyone experiencing hearing loss
- A child having chronic ear or throat infections

Most ears, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeons in the United States are referred to as otolaryngologist and the specialty as otolaryngology. Ear surgery is usually performed to correct specific causes of hearing loss. Nose surgery can include different types of procedures necessary to treat sinus problems (sinus surgery). Throat surgery can include complicated procedures such as cancer of the larynx , or more simple procedures such as surgical removal of the adenoids or tonsils .

Your ear has three main parts: outer, middle and inner. You use all of them in hearing. Sound waves come in through your outer ear. They reach your middle ear, where they make your eardrum vibrate. The vibrations are transmitted through three tiny bones, called ossicles, in your middle ear. The vibrations travel to your inner ear, a snail-shaped organ. The inner ear makes the nerve impulses that are sent to the brain. Your brain recognizes them as sounds. The inner ear also controls balance.

Common Ear Disorders:

- Infection
- Allergy
- Trauma
- Cysts and Tumors
- Cholesteatoma

Your throat is a tube that carries food to your esophagus and air to your windpipe and larynx. The technical name for throat is pharynx.

Common Throat Diseases:

- Difficulty Swallowing
- Painful Swallowing
- Noisy Breathing Sounds
- Swollen Neck Lymph Nodes
- Hoarse Voice

Whether it's large or small, button-like or beak-like, your nose is important to your health. It filters the air you breathe, removing dust, germs and irritants. It warms and moistens the air to keep your lungs and tubes that lead to them from drying out. Your nose also contains the nerve cells that help your sense of smell.

Common Nose Diseases:

- Epistaxis-Bleeding from Nose
- Injuries to Nose
- Vaso-Motor Rhinitis
- Sneezing, Rhinitis and Ear Infection
